Andy joined HM Forces in 1989 and worked with the Royal Military Police within the UK and overseas.
In 1993 he joined the Metropolitan Police and was posted to Lambeth Borough. He worked within specialist teams over a four-year period and led on serious investigations and covert operations against local and organised crime.
In 1999 Andy transferred to Dorset Police and from 2000 he joined the Tactical Firearms Unit, operating at Constable and Sergeant level within the Force ARV.
In 2004 on promotion to Inspector he became the Chief Firearms Instructor with responsibility for Firearms training and command of the TFU, where he was responsible for the delivery of Command training at Strategic and Tactical level as well as responsible for training delivery across the spectrum of armed policing roles.
He has worked, trained, and collaborated with specialist partner agencies including US SWAT, PSNI and UK Special Forces to support strategic objectives and prepare effective operational firearms response and contingency plans. These included 2012 UK Olympics, Active Shooter/lone wolf response, Political Conferences, Royal visits, after which he then implemented protocols for future major event planning.
Andy worked extensively over 15 years in the following armed policing roles: Close Protection operative, Specialist Firearms Officer, Tactical Advisor, Operational Firearms Commander, Tactical Firearms Commander where he took command of spontaneous and high threat operations with Firearms teams.
In 2017 he joined Special Branch / Counter Terrorism Policing successfully completing his Counter Terrorism Security Coordinators course (CT Secco), taking responsibility for the planning and coordination for CT Security operations and large-scale event planning.
As a Detective Inspector, he took command and responsibility for protecting UK Borders with responsibility for Counter Terrorism and Counter Espionage threats. In 2018 his team also supported the investigation into the Salisbury Novichok incident.
Andy was the founder of the CT Special Operations Unit, which delivered a specialist maritime capability for CT Policing, targeting CT threats, Counter Espionage and Hostile Reconnaissance. He has planned, coordinated, and commanded complex, covert and sensitive operations within the SOU and coordinated and planned training around CBRN and specialist search awareness for CT officers and partners in difficult and challenging environments.
He has also designed, developed, and delivered specialist initial and refresher training to CT operators, inclusive of Command and advisor roles at both a National and International level.
Andy has provided specialist and strategic advice and training to sensitive partner agencies, specialist military units, Specialist Military Units and government agencies at both home and abroad.
In 2021 he planned, coordinated, and led his team in support of the G7 Summit to mitigate and deal with threats from Hostile State Actors and Counter Terrorism. He was directly responsible for the deployment of specialist assets by land, sea and air and worked with and in support of sensitive partner agencies.
In 2022 Andy co-chaired and established a National Security working group for Specialist Projects and Capabilities advising and working with partner agencies, including Home Office and the United Nations.
In Sept 2022 he successfully directed, planned, and coordinated his team and partner agencies in the visit of a sensitive international partner agency to UKIC
